Chief Officer’s Log, Stardate 240212.21

The installation of Commander Kirk’s new cybernetic arm is scheduled for today in the Medical Bay and I am hoping that it will perform as well as the simulations have shown.  The arm itself is a crude model of what I hoped to build but unfortunately I had to settle for some “less than human” designs that allow for interesting manipulations of the arm and installation of several devices that would normally end up as additional equipment on an away team mission.

The arm itself consists of several power cells.  One of them is responsible for powering the arm, the next powers the concealed phaser, and the last one is used for the tricorder embedded in the lower arm.  There is also an additional feature, a miniature teleporter that can be used for one teleport only for emergency situations.  The only disadvantage of using this feature is that it destroys the neural mesh that was implanted on the Commander’s brain and can cause severe brain damage.

Repairs on the ship are slowly continuing and there is not much to do.  I am redesigning some systems to improve efficiency and installing several new measures to protect the ship from EM emissions and other radiation that would destroy critical equipment.  Also design for the new runabout is still on the drawing board and there are some design errors that still need to be addressed.

Chief Engineer’s Personal Log, Stardate 240212.21

I am worried about Kirk.  That new arm is not going to last long.  I have the feeling that the arm is going to cause more pain and suffering for him than that damned prosthetic device was doing him.  I’ve talked to the people at the Daystrom Institute and they have offered to help design the operating system and the next version of the arm so that the Commander may have a more “normal” life than what I can give him but I just don’t know.  So far he seems okay but I know that can change in a second.

The ship is okay and looking good.  The repair crews are doing a good job and I don’t see any problems so far.  The new protective measures are being installed and I hope they’ll do us some good in the future.

I always wanted to be an engineer but who knew other officers could damage a ship so badly?
