STARBASE 692, Milky Way Galaxy – Sources within the Alpha Fleet Command are indicating that the Civonian Fifth Battle Line is now in imminent danger of being overrun, threatening millions of lives in what one officer called "the worst act of genocide since the Eugenics Wars."
The latest development in the long-running Civonian-Nij War is sure to mark an ominous turn for the United Federation of Planets, which has supported the Civonian Empire since first encountering them in the late 2380s. However, analysts report that the loss of the heaviest military units of Clan Demeter nearly three months ago has delivered a shocking military blow that the Civonian Empire has not recovered from.
"Clan Demeter," stated one officer, who requested anonymity on the matter because of the sensitive nature of the U.F.P. presence in Triangulum, "was the elite corps of the Civonian military. The near-annihilation of their entire fleet was a virtual body-slam to the entire Empire. It's why the entire fourth line of defense was overrun in a matter of weeks."
Nij invasion forces are suspected to be preparing for a move against the fifth battle line, a series of hastily-prepared surface defenses and the remnants of the Civonian military that are poised to defend the homeworld of the empire. Even now, speculation remains rampant as to how long a defense can be maintained against the military forces of the Nij. Several recent reports shown to the Federation News Network estimate that casualties may be somewhere in the order of 50-100 million within the first 48 hours of an invasion.
The possibility, according to several sources within the Federation government, exists for as many as 150-200 million dead within seven days, with deaths of both combatants and noncombatants increasing proportional to the amount of Nij landed on the surface of the planet.
"Nij have no respect for the rules of warfare," remarked a source within the Alpha Fleet Command. "If they see something that has even a remote chance of posing a threat to them, they'll kill it, beat it to a pulp, them move on. In the long run, it's all over for the Civonian Empire. Their best bet now is a government in exile."
