A couple of weeks ago some of the group's lists and channels were filled with discussion of the next Star Trek motion picture, the as yet unnamed Star Trek 11. It had been released that the story of this movie would focus around the early days of the relationship between Kirk and Spock at the Academy - something that would throw our understanding of the Trek timeline into uproar as no one really believed such a relationship had ever been formed between those two characters.
However, Empire has reported that this may not all be the truth. The movie's producer, JJ Abrams (of Lost and Mission Impossible 3 fame), was featured in an interview with the magazine where he denied the information as being true.
"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation... People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
So what is the movie going to be about? The producer definitely isn't saying yet but it seems likely that it may focus around the TOS period and involve some of that series' characters.
"Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that… you know, they could live again."
One thing I will wager money on is that we aren't going to see William Shatner reprising the role of Kirk. There may have been a legitimate argument for him to carry on in the role back in 1994 after Generations was released, but a 75 year old actor probably has no place on the bridge of a Federation starship fighting off a load of Klingons.
