This policy has now been superseded by a new promotions policy and is only included on this site for reference purposes.

The UFP Division Promotion Policy is important to understanding the requirements and expectations associated with promotion and the policy that must be used by SIM leaders in promoting their crew. Please Note the Following:

Senior Officers Training Course

This course is strongly recommended before a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, though it is not required. The course is also a pre-requisite for both the Email and IRC Command Courses.

Time Served

The promotion times listed below are minimums. It does not mean that one will necessarily be promoted on these times as there are other factors which are considered: maturity and ability to lead among them.

Please Note:

  • New UCIP members wishing to play an enlisted character must start at the rank of Crewman or Private. Existing UCIP members may start at the rank of Lance Corporal/Specialist or lower. This is at the discretion of the SIM Commanding Officer.
  • Field Commissions to Officer Ranks depend on how much time the simmer has served in the Enlisted track and post availability. Field Commissions up to Lieutenant Commander are at the SIM CO's discretion. Field Commissions above Lieutenant Commander require authorization from the Subfleet Commander and/or Starfleet Commander.
  • Enlisted Rates can also choose to take the Warrant Officer path depending on positions open. The Warrant ranks are only available to Enlisted after PO2 (i.e. they can go PO2/Sgt or WO1).

Enlisted to Warrant Officer Conversions:

Starfleet/SFMC  Starfleet/SFMC Minimum Time Requirements Additional
PO3/Cpl  to WO1  with nine weeks served as PO3
PO2/Sgt  to  CW2  With twelve weeks served as PO2

All higher Enlisted ranks transfer to CW2 then climb the ladder to CW3 & CW4.

Please Note:

By starting the WO conversion at a PO3/Cpl to WO1 it allows plenty of time for a new simmer to get acclimated to SIMming and familiar with the roll that they will be playing as a Warrant Officer.  That is 24 weeks from Crw/Pvt to the time that they become a WO.  This also encourages experienced players to want to jump to the warrant officer track as well by not requiring them to have to wait too long to pick up the pip'd collar.  Also by including the CW5 it should be reserved for rare simmers and like a MCPO or SgtMaj, there would normally only be one per ship/sim.

Explanation of the Warrant Officer:

A Warrant Officer is always an experienced enlisted person first.  They have been doing their job in their field for a while and have a good grasp of how things work in their department and Starfleet.  Warrant Officer's represent those top enlisted people that want to be more technically involved in their job.  After attending Warrant Officer School they are considered a lower grade of officer, technically knowledgeable in their field and able to command the enlisted personnel under them.

For example, enlisted personnel desiring to join a combat squadron would be required to attend Warrant Officer School to be educated in proper conduct becoming of an Officer as well as flight school.  Another example is an enlisted person within medical desiring to become more then a nurse or med-tech, such as a field surgeon.  Additional examples include senoir field opertors within Starfleet Intelligence or case invesitgators within the Judge Advocate General Corps.

For promotion from Admiral to Fleet Admiral:

  • The officer must have served a minimum of 18 months since their last promotion before becoming
    ELIGIBLE for their next promotion.
  • The Officer must also be a Subfleet Commander or in Starfleet Commander to be eligible for this rank.
Acting Ranks

Many Commanding Officer have used and continue to use Acting ranks to maintain IC chains of command and an air of believability and consistency. Acting ranks are perfectly acceptable, but a character's database entry should NOT be updated to reflect an acting rank. Acting ranks can be granted up to the level of Lieutenant Commander. Any rank above that of LtCmdr must be authorised by Subfleet and Starfleet Command

NOTE: Comfirmed Sim CO's who have not yet obtained the rank of Captain are required to designate themselves as Acting Captain in order to maintain the distinction between them and people who have earned the rank. This also helps to alleviate bottlenecking below.

Rank Transfers

Most rank transfer are between existing characters or players wishing to use a rank earned in another organization. Starfleet relies on its ranking system for structure and not the levels system.

Ensign - Lieutenant: Granted at the Commanding Officer discretion in consultation with Subfleet Command.

LtCmdr: Made at the discretion of Subfleet Command.

Commander - Captain: Starfleet Command will evaluate on an individual basis. - Inter-character only

NOTE: CO's and crew of existing SIMs transferring in during development are covered under the Development Process.

Each Inter-division transfer will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

If you have any quetions on the Federation Division's promotion guidelines, please contact UFP Command.
