The USS Enterprise-D was the fifth Federation Starfleet vessel to bear the name and in a short lifespan lived up to what had become an illustrious name within Starfleet.

History
The Enterprise was launched in 2364 under the command of the already renowned Captain Jean-Luc Picard (formerly commanding the USS Stargazer). Built at the Utopia Planitia Ship Yards it conducted its shakedown period out of Earth Station McKinley before being handed over to its Commanding Officer for its first mission.
On her first mission the Enterprise made contact with a new species of seemingly unlimited power, the Q Continuum. The member of the species they made contact with, named Q, would go on to cause various problems for the ship and her crew as well as various other Starfleet vessels and stations, using and misusing his omnipotence to cause havoc.
