Alex Arin
Admiral Alex Arin is a former Chief of Fleet Operations, now retired.
BiographyChildhoodArin was born in 2347 aboard the USS Montana, an Excelsior class starship assigned to patrol duties, at the height of the Cardassian-Federation war. His father, Joel Arin, was a Starfleet Commander who was Executive Officer of the Montana and his mother, a Starfleet Lieutenant was the ship's Chief Medical Officer. Shortly after his birth, his mother, Susan, transferred off of front line duty to Starbase 463 to provide a better environment in which to raise her child. In 2349, when Alex was two years old, his father, who had now risen to commanding the Montana was seriously injured during a Cardassian attack. He was released from Starfleet service on medical grounds but died several months later due to the ongoing effects of his injuries. Following her husband's death, Susan Arin returned to Earth to live with her parents in the outskirts of San Francisco and to teach at Starfleet Academy. A year later Alex entered school but was soon placed into a class for children with behavioural problems. Eventually, Alex settled down in school and performed to a satisfactory level, by the time he entered high school he was seen as a bright and energetic young man and had a great interest in following in his parents' footsteps in a career with Starfleet. At the age of eighteen, in 2365, Alex applied to Starfleet Academy and was rejected on his first attempt. He entered employment with a engineering contractor working at Utopia Planitia and applied again to the Academy the following two years before finally being accepted in 2367. Academy and early Starfleet careerAlex did not excel academically at the Academy but created a very positive reputation of himself with his attitude and willingness to put the work in to succeed. He quickly began to take on extra responsibilities as a Cadet and by his third year had served internships at both Starfleet Operations and Starfleet Engineering. In his final year of studies in the Academy, Arin was given the privelege of leading the elite Nova Squadron and rebuilding its reputation for accuracy and discipline after the previous team had caused an accident that had killed a Cadet. In 2371, he graduated from the Academy and was assigned to the USS Endeavour as a flight control officer. The ship was a prized assignment, under the famous Captain Amasov it was the only ship to have survived the Battle of Wolf 359 with the Borg in 2367. Following a year of excellent service, including receiving a Bronze Star for Valor for his work in evacuating the crew of a space station suffering a reactor containment breach, Arin was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and made the Chief Flight Control Officer, serving the alpha shift. In 2373 at the Battle of Sector 001 with the Borg, Arin again showed his bravery when he continued to man the badly damaged bridge of the Endeavour with just a handful of officers after it sufferred a direct hit during the battle. Following the battle, he had to be treated for significant burns from explosions and fires around his station and the effects of smoke inhalation. Following five years of service aboard the Endeavour throughout the Dominion War, in 2376, Arin was promoted to full Lieutenant and made Chief Engineer of the starship. In this role he oversaw a complete refit of the vessel at Utopia Planitia and served in the role for a year after the ship was relaunched in 2378. Aboard the USS TitanIn 2379 he was offered the position of Chief Engineer of the USS Titan under Captain William Riker who had made himself famous as Executive Officer of the USS Enterprise-D and -E. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander prior to taking up the position. Later in 2379, the Titan led a Federation task force in the Neutral Zone to negotiate a lasting treaty with the Romulan Star Empire. The talks quickly broke down and the vessel was reassigned to negotiate mounting tensions developing between the Cardassians, Klingons and the Breen Confederacy. In early 2381 the Federation entered the cold war between the Breen and the Klingon and Cardassian coaliton against the Breen. The Titan led a task force of over two hundred starships. In the subsequent battle, the Titan suffered a great deal of damage and her Executive Officer was killed, but the Breen were defeated and a peace treaty signed. Following the battle with the Breen, Arin was promoted to the role of Executive Officer and was later recognised by Starfleet Command with a promotion to the rank of Commander. He continued to serve aboard the Titan as it was again assigned to diplomatic duties, this time with the Breen. In 2384 Arin accepted command of the Titan as Riker was moved to a flag position at Starfleet Operations, he received a promotion to Captain with the change in position. The ship was reassigned to the 9th Fleet under the command of Rear Admiral Trish Wallace and entered the Gamma Quadrant to lead the defense of the Federation's colonies there and the new Starbase 600. Arin and the Titan led diplomatic talks with the Dominion in 2387 that led to a non-aggression pact and free trade. The crew of the ship were publicly recognised for their role in the historic agreement by the Federation President Maury Prince in a televised address to announce it. Staffing the 9th FleetIn 2392, after the drastic changes in leadership resulting from an infection of key personnel in all of the major galactic powers, Arin was recalled from the Titan to be promoted to Commodore and to serve as Chief of Staff of the 9th Fleet on Starbase 600. Just three years later, in 2395, Arin was promoted to Rear Admiral and assumed command of the 9th Fleet. With the formation of the United Confederation of Insterstellar Planets a year earlier, Starbase 600 was now the central command hub for the operations of all of its members within the Gamma Quadrant. The Dominion, in 2397 suddenly launched a devastating attack on the UCIP colonies and vessels in the Gamma Quadrant. Due to the sheer weight of forces at the Dominion's control the defense mounted by Starfleet was a tactical disaster, Arin ordered a complete evacuation of the quadrant and abandons Starbase 600 to return to Deep Space Nine through the Bajoran wormhole. Starfleet Operations ordered Arin to assume command of the Confederation response to the Dominion attacks and he received a field promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral. He operated from Deep Space Nine to drive to Dominion forces in the Alpha Quadrant back to Cardassian space, they suffered defeat after defeat until all Dominion forces turned tail and ran, heading back to the Gamma Quadrant the long way. By the end of 2397 Arin was able to order the 9th Fleet back through the Bajoran wormhole with orders to liberate the Confedertion colonies in the Gamma Quadrant and retake Starbase 600. On the first day of February 2398, Arin returned to the starbase to again take control of Gamma Quadrant operations after ensuring a resounding victory for the Confederation forces over the Dominion. At Starfleet CommandLater in 2398, the Romulan Empire withdrew itself from the Confederation and launched an attack on Starfleet. All out war with the Empire is declared and Arin was recalled to this new battle front to help coordinate Starfleet operations. By the end of the year the war was over but the cost was great, the three major powers had pulled apart and the Confederation is in shambles. The Federation continued its membership along with a number of minor members but the great benefits to peace and power across the galaxy were lost. At the conclusion of the war, Arin was recalled to Starfleet Command to help coordinate a response to new internal threats within the Federation that had come about due to the crumbling of the UCIP affiliation. By 2400, Arin was serving as Chief of Starfleet Security at Starfleet Command and the Federation was slowly beginning to stabalise again following years of wars, failed treaties and internal troubles. In 2403, Arin was reassigned to act as a Chief of Staff at Starfleet Command. Here, he managed the Starfleet Operations Centre. In 2405 he was promoted to full Admiral and appointed by the Starfleet Commander to the role of Chief of Fleet Operations. By early 2406, Arin was already beginning to make his mark on the face of Starfleet and the Federation. The structure of the fleets was simplified as more Starfleet resources were redeployed to support the now well established and successful United Confederation Fleet. Due to UCF coverage, some established needs within the Federation were reduced, including long range search and recovery and exploratory forces. In the biggest change that was made, Arin's old command, the 9th Fleet was nearly totally redeployed into the Delta Fleet to once and for all consolidate the Starfleet presence in the Gamma Quadrant. In late 2006, Admiral Arin retired from Starfleet Command. His successor is Admiral Lara Arn. OOC InformationThis character is created and used for divisional plot development.
