The Ferengi are a technologically advanced humanoid civilization. Extremely capitalistic and sexist, they are a people with strict rules. Breaking such rules could lead to a seizure of assests - a great dishonor in Ferengi society. The Ferengi built their entire culture on pursuit of wealth. They are always looking for ways of earning money and rarely turn down a business opportunity, legal or otherwise.


Ferengi culture is a pure capitalist society. But unlike Terran philosophers, who believe that it is in the employers interest to help his employees, Ferengi captains of enterprise are expected to take advantage of their workers. Ferengis shun the notions of the labour union and of worker's rights. The philosophy that everyone is out to exploit everyone else is defined in the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition - the moral code of Ferengi life.

The Ferengi Commerce Alliance government is headed by the Grand Nagus. There are currently, however, two Naguses in power: Zek and Brunt. Ferengi culture is extremly patriarchial. Until recently, women were not permitted to wear clothes, earn profits, or quote from the Rules of Acquisition. This has only changed since former Grand Nagus Zek revised the Ferengi Bill of Opportunities to include female Ferengis. Ferengi culture, however, is still adapting to the change.

The Ferengi originate from planet Ferenginar. It took 10,000 years for them to finally unite to become the Ferengi Alliance, their present governing system. By the 2300's, Ferengi expanded on an interstellar level when they bought warp drive technology. The Federation knew very little of the Ferengi Alliance until first contact was made in 2364. Ferengi soon after realized the market potential the Federation has to offer and many have established themselves on Federation planets and starbases. Although they are not fully petitioned members of the Confederation, the Ferengi have involved themselves in every aspect of UCIP, taking advantage of the opportunities for increasing their profits.
