Bajorans are a humanoid civilization originating from planet Bajor. Developped half a million years ago, their ancient
society revolves around religion, but also has a wealth of artistic background. Bajor was occupied during
the 24th century by the Cardassians, during which time Bajoran culture declined. By 2369, however,
Bajorans united drove away the Cardassian oppresors and began rebuilding.

Ancient Bajorans were advanced long before humans ever were. As early as eight centuries ago,
Bajorans were exploring space with solar-sail vessels, some trekking as far away as Cardassia. In the
22nd century, Bajoran families were divided into castes, called D'jarras. A D'jarra defined one's social
standing and choice of occupation.
Bajorans are a deeply religious people. The spiritual leader, the kai, is hightly respected by and influential
in Bajoran society. Bajorans believe that a near-by wormhole is home to a people called the Prophets.
These Prophets keep the wormhole stable and guide ships safely through it. The wormhole is also the
site of the Celestial Temple.
The Cardassian Union claimed Bajor in around 2328, and formally annexed it in 2339. Many
Bajorans were driven from their homeworld. The remaining were oppressed by the Cardassians,
who stripped the planet of its resources. Cardassians also built the space station Terok Nor, which
would later be designated Deep Space 9, in Bajoran orbit. Bajorans soon became violent towards
their captors. The D'jarra system was abolished so that Bajorans of all D'jarras could fight together
against the Cardassians. Finally, in 2369, Bajoran resistance managed to drive them away.
Bajor presently has established a provisional government to assume planetary leadership. This
government is led by a legislative body, called the Chamber of Ministers. This Chamber is itself
headed by a First Minister. The members of the Chamber were divided in 2370, by isolationist
groups opposing Federation assistance for reconstruction. When the Federation Council voted in
2373 to admit Bajor to the Federation, the Chamber moved to delay admission. This motion was
advised by Benjamin Sisko, believed to be an Emissary to the Prophets. Sisko experienced
visions that convinced him that admission was imprudent at the time. |
