Greetings,
I know this email is long in coming, but frankly, I didn’t know how best to write it. In the end, I decided to just say what was in my heart.
Over the last two weeks, we have seen scenes of horror from the small pacific state of Haiti. Already a severely crippled country, it couldn’t have happened in any worse a place. The sheer humanitarian disaster alone makes even the strongest of us weep a little. With an estimated death toll in the hundreds of thousands, and displaced people in the millions, this is by far and a way the single biggest natural disaster since the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004.
With military and civilian agencies from all over the world pouring into Haiti on a daily basis, it is often easy to forget that people close to home are caught up in this. Joho, our own Deputy Division Commander of TrekOps is out there right now, making a difference. He is in probably one of the most dangerous places to be right now, with law and order effectively gone in the major cities, and rescue workers being attacked by armed gangs to steal their tools and supplies.
So, I’d like you all to take a moment to think about Joho, and anyone else from our own little community caught up in this turmoil.
There are many places where you can make a donation to support Haiti’s relief efforts, and I ask each of you to find just $10 to send to them, or whatever you can spare. Its going to a good cause, and Star Trek is about the greater good – the large gathering of worlds to support one another. If every member here gave just $10, with our estimated 110 members, we’d raise $1100 alone. Is that not a worthy and rightous thing to do? Is that not what Gene Roddenberry invisioned with Star Trek? A better world to live in?
If you wish to donate, here are three links you can use, or you can donate to other causes if you find them.
Thank you for reading
