Member Code of Conduct

The Members Code of Conduct sets out the basis of expectations of behaviour that the organisation has for all members, and the processes employed for dealing with infractions.
The general premise of the code is:

  • Treat others as you would like to be treated: with respect.
  • Play nice
  • Share
  • Have fun

1. Name

1.1 The name of this Act shall be the “UCIP Member Code of Conduct”.

2. Effect

2.1 This Act shall become effective seven (7) days following endorsement by the UCIP Board of Trustees.

3. Scope

3.1 The scope of this Act shall include all members of UCIP, regardless of status as defined in the UCIP Constitution, whilst engaged in UCIP-related activities.

3.2 This Act shall not apply to personal disputes occurring in private forums (such as Instant Messenger, private IRC queries, direct e-mail that does not traverse UCIP servers), or public forums not related to UCIP.

4. Code of Conduct

4.1 Members shall at all times abide by the following Code of Conduct when partaking of activities related to UCIP (including using resources of the organisation):

4.1.1 All members shall treat others (including members and non-members) with respect at all times.

4.1.2 Members shall set a professional example at all times, performing their duties to the best of their individual ability.

4.1.3 Members shall ensure that their comments, actions and behaviour have regard for UCIP’s no-tolerance stance to discrimination including but not restricted to, discrimination based on race, color, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, political beliefs, marital or family status.

4.1.4 Members must at all times comply with the individual rating of UCIP chat rooms, mailing lists or SIMs and ensure their behaviour is appropriate to that category.

4.1.5 Members must at all times comply with the UCIP Constitution, Bylaws and policies as amended from time-to-time and published on the UCIP website.

4.1.6 By joining or participating in a SIM, Fleet or Division, members submit to any specific Codes of Conduct such entity may additionally impose.

4.1.6.1 In the event of conflict, the UCIP Code of Conduct shall take precedence.

4.2 Members breaching the Code of Conduct shall be referred to the appropriate convening authority for investigation.

5. Convening Authorities

5.1 For alleged contraventions of the Code of Conduct within a SIM, its IRC channel or its mailing list, the Commanding Officer shall be the convening authority. If deemed guilty, the Commanding Officer may:

a) Reprimand the member;

b) Reduce the member in rank not exceeding two (2) grades;

c) Suspend the member from the SIM only for a period not exceeding 30 days.

5.2 For alleged contraventions of the Code of Conduct within a Fleet/Division resource (such as its IRC channel or mailing list), the Division Commander shall be the convening authority. If deemed guilty, the Division Commander may:

a) Reprimand the member;

b) Reduce the member in rank not exceeding three (3) grades;

c) Suspend the member for a specified period from a SIM, Fleet or the Division;

d) Ban the member from the Division.

5.3 For alleged contraventions in UCIP-wide resources (including IRC channels or mailing lists), or where a Commanding Officer or Division Commander feels the issue warrants, the President of UCIP shall convene a Board of Inquiry empanelled by the Board of Trustees. If deemed guilty, the Board of Enquiry may take such action as it deems appropriate up to and including revocation of membership.

6. Disputes outside of UCIP Jurisdiction

6.1 Disputes between members outside the scope of this Act (as defined by s.3), shall be resolved by members amongst themselves and shall not be the responsibility of UCIP to resolve.

6.2   UCIP shall not involve itself in disputes outside of its jurisdiction.

6.3 Should members be unable to resolve disputes, they are encouraged to use IRC, IM and e-mail program rules to ignore or automatically delete unwanted correspondence from the other party.
