History

The history of Starbase 400:

Starbase 400 was erected in the Neutral Zone over twenty years ago, on SD 237505.15, a year after the renowned defeat of the Dominion and the toppling of the corrupt Cardassian regime.

After the cooperative efforts of the Romulans, Klingons, and Federation toppled the Dominion's chokehold in the Alpha Quadrant, the alliance seemed simply too good to last. In an almost desperate appeal for the peace to last, the President of the United Federation of Planets proposed to the Romulan and Klingon leaders that a Starbase be established in the Neutral Zone. Not for the purpose of spying or distrust, but in the interests of peace.

He said it would be the standing, permanent sign to all who would oppose the Alpha Quadrant, that we could put our differences aside and work as one, and some day, we would do so even without the opposition. He proposed that the Senior Staff of this Station be precisely one-third Federation officers, one-third Romulan Empire officers, and one-third Klingon Empire officers.

After months of debate regarding the placement of these officers, the requirements of the station's sensor arrays (and who would monitor those arrays), and the like, the final plans and command hierarchy were agreed upon. Due to the fact the proposition of not only this station, but of a lasting peace came from the Federation, the Federation requested that the CO and XO be Federation representatives.

(While several alternatives were considered, most with a triumvirate of CO's from each culture, it was decided that, in times of crisis, one clear, resounding voice would be required in order to keep calm on the station and maintain efficiency.) In exchange for what they realized was a daringly large demand, the Federation immediately proposed that there be two representatives, officially titled "Detachment Commanders", who would advise the CO on actions their government would approve of, and keep the CO and XO apprised of all new developments near the border that could affect Versailles.

While this method allowed flexibility in the command structure to ensure that all voices were heard, it also left one true commander that could override the din of demands if timely decisions were required of the CO. These Detachment Commanders would also serve to ensure that the two Senior Officers posted from each Empire would interact seamlessly with the crew and kept all cross-culture efforts on the station coordinated and efficient.

For the next five years, the newly staffed station worked out all the intricate details of how exactly to function alongside one another and did quite well. The symbol of peace lasted through the years, a shining example that it all could be done, until, fifteen years after it's inception, the events described in the official United Confederation of Planets timeline brought about a new, more formal, lasting peace - in the uniting of all three "Empires" into a cohesive, cooperative group, the largest democratic union of cultures in the known history of the galaxy.

As a result, a larger, even more permanent station was to be erected in the Neutral Zone. A port-of-call for any and all Alpha Quadrant races that would come in peace. It had trading levels, decks upon decks of hydroponics bays and the like, and the largest main dock in the Alpha Quadrant. The Federation Superstation, it was called, and it quickly put Versailles out of business.

The debate over the Superstation raged on for several years. As it did so, all three Alpha Quadrant powers began sending more...unimportant officers to Versailles. Slowly, the calibre of individuals staffing Versailles went down. By three years into the "Superstation"'s lifespan, Versailles was staffed with throwaways - Starfleet, Romulan, and Klingon officers that were completely untried, no field training whatsoever; that had screwed up but had too many connections (or too many past victories) to simply dismiss from active service; or that had simply royally angered someone in Command and he had them sent to Versailles as a punishment.

As a result, crime, smuggling, and trafficking of every sort increased slowly as time went on. The civilian compliment that moved in was more and more from the darker elements of the galaxy, and the good citizens, despite complaints to the command staff, could do nothing about it.

As the staff and civilian compliment of Versailles continued to degrade in quality, an unheard-of event in Federation history occurred. A crime lord known only as "Dark Talon" somehow got aboard Versailles, and, using the already-growing network of smugglers, dealers, and assorted other criminals aboard, in an unprecedented guerrilla-warfare maneuver, he got all of them to take up arms against the Federation security forces and attempted to take the lower half of Starbase Versailles.

The criminals, stretched over three hundred and thirty decks, were no match for coordinated security forces, and "Dark Talon" knew they wouldn't be. Five hours into the battle (at a cost of nearly two hundred federation lives), he recalled every officer in his new army to decks 590 through 690, the lower one hundred decks near the reactors, and held his ground.

Over the next six months, Federation forces tried to pry it from his grip, but he had more than enough criminals to hold his ground and then some. Since that fateful day (SD 239703.14), the last one hundred decks of Starbase Versailles have been lost to the criminal element. The Commanding Officer was fired seven months after the assault.

In a final bad luck string for the once proud Starbase, its Commanding Officer failed in his duty when a terrorist group attacked and gained full control of the base, in this it was also alleged the Commander committed murder, with assistance from the Beta Marines Versailles was reinstated under Federation control shortly after. The Commanding Officer, Commander Matthew Desmond was remanded for court martial and a new Commander was placed as the Star bases new Commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Jake Jay Thorpe.

It was then the Starbase was removed from the neutral zone and placed in a peak in Federation space meeting both the Klingon and Romulan boarders, in this position it was also very close to a newly discovered Wormhole leading to a strange undiscovered area of space littered with wormholes.

Since both the Romulan and Klingon detachments had been resolved, and Commander Thorpe had regained the Starbase reputation and put Versailles on the map once again, known for its busy trade and thriving civilian populace, Jake and his crew commanded the Station in style also personally refitting and re-commissioning there new Support ship, a Nova Class, the USS Cerberus. Just before the Cerberus was due to go out on her first test run Starbase Versailles received a scouting mission, this mission entailed travelling to the near by Oraken System to investigate reports from traders of a Vanguard Fleet orbiting Draken III.

The Vanguard were a terrorist group, they claimed to not believe in the Federations ways, but believe in a new way, the vanguard had declared war on the federation using what ever means necessary to repel against Starfleet and anyone who follow it.

On Arriving at Draken III the Nova class vessel was ambushed by numerous vessels, with extreme damage the crew attempted one last trick by darting down into the Draken III atmosphere. The plan worked and no vessels came straight after them, but they were too damaged, and on a crash course with the ocean bellow.

It was unpreventable, the ship plummeted into the water, they were already in very bad shape, but to add to the problems, they were sinking, the hull would soon be crushed like a paper bag, microfractures were appearing throughout the vessels main skeleton. It took some handy work, but the engineering team managed to get basic functions online, and with some adjustments to the thrusters they began an accent to the surface.

Back on Starbase 400 it was reported the Vanguard Fleet was enclosing on Starbase Versailles, the Commander left in charge evacuated the station of all non essential crew and prepared for battle, the attacking force wanted to take the station to gain a foot hold into beta Fleet space.

The Cerberus managed to limp to land with a final hop from the ocean to land, teams were dispatched asap, and repairs commenced to get them back into the space above them. It was only a few minutes after the repairs were complete enough to leave the planet that Vanguard ground troops launched a surprise attack. A large fight had broken out between Vanguard and Starfleet Security forces. Despite the surprise attack and overwhelming odds, the security force was well prepared thanks to its lead, Marine Captain Jay Watkins. After a long fight, the engineers managed to repair the Cerberus and get her up and running. It took off, leaving the Vanguard alone on the planet.

The Station was hit hard by a heavy attack, she held her ground but the twenty plus vessels ruled knocking out all the Stations defences, the boarding teams began to beam over, taking the command center first, all remaining crew fled to cargo bay three to regroup and set up and injury center.

In response to the Cerberus, a task force was sent from Beta Command arriving with the USS Resolution and the USS Intrepid. It was decided to leave the Cerberus behind for repairs, all remaining useful crew beamed over to the Resolution for service, the task force headed into battle, ready to fight what ever they could meet.

A fierce battle erupted, with Starfleet and Vanguard forces vying for control of the Starbase. On Stardate 240603.02, Starbase Versailles was destroyed by the detonation of explosives left by the Vanguard.

Rescued in the nick of time, several remaining crew were beamed off the Starbase by the USS Dirae, believed to have gone rouge. Captain Thorpe and Lieutenant Thomas were among the rescued, confined to brig cells.

Soon after, the crew members were escorted from the Dirae's brig and placed in guest quarters on deck four, which had been sealed off with various security protocols, Commander Tia, Lieutenant Thomas and Captain Thorpe were all interrogated by the Commanding Admiral.

After much drama, it was revealed both parties were friendly and all crew were released from there quarters and a course was set to meet with the USS Cerberus, during which a horrible murder occurred.

A shocking event, the Commanding Officer, Captain Jake Thorpe was murdered inside his guest quarters, the death affected many, and an investigation begun immediately led by Commander Tia.

Once on Starbase 22 Commander Tia reported in to Beta Command on Captain Thorpe's behalf, Admiral Fox took the news well, promoting Tia to be the new Commanding Officer of the new Versailles, Starbase 99.

Before anything could be done, the crews of both the USS Resolution and Versailles gathered for a funeral for their lost Captain, friends and family all joined in, each saying their goodbyes. As one of the Captains last remaining orders, promotions and awards were given out at the ceremony, in memory of Thorpe.

After the mournful loss of Starbase 400 and the beloved Captain Jay Thorpe, a new order was put in for the construction of a new starbase; Starbase 99 Versailles.

Background

Notable Events

On SD240506.xx the crew of Starbase Versailles succesfully warded off an attack made by a unknown species sending a artificially created asteroid, and loaded with weapons, to destroy the station. With some well aimed torpedoes and a drilling vehicle on the astroid's surface, explosives were lowered to the core and detonated. With the aid of several starfleet vessels and the station's weapons the astroid was destroyed.

On SD240510.xx Starbase Versailles was struck with a strange and unknown virus while dealing with a known dangerous terrorist at the same time, after many losses the virus was cured by the Station's CMO, however, the terrorist is still at large.

On SD240512.xx the Versailles crew boarded the station's newly minted support ship, the USS Cerberus, to scout out Vanguard infested space. While on their scouting mission, the Cerberus was ambushed and shot down by a Vanguard force over Draken III, forcing them to crash into its acidic oceans. The support ship, Waverider was dispatched from the Cerberus, and managed to send a distress call to Starbase Versailles.

On SD240512.xx the USS Resolution was dispatched to help ensure the continued security of Starbase Versailles.

On SD240512.xx Starbase Versailles dispatched the USS Resolution to retrieve the crew from the USS Cerberus, and salvage the Cerberus if possible.

On SD240601.xx all civilian and non-essential personnel are evacuated from Versailles as a Vanguard attack force aproaches. The USS Vengeance along with 5 Klingon Birds of Prey come to the station's aid, scaring off the Vanguard Force.

On SD240601.xx Starbase Versailles receives a distress call from the USS Cerberus. The USS Resolution is sent by Starbase Versailles to retrieve the Cerberus and bring her crew home to Versailles.

On SD240603.02 Starbase Versailles is destroyed, the Vanguard having detonated pre-set explosives.

On SD240603.15 Captain Jake Jay Thorpe is murdered aboard the USS Dirae. Commander Osric Tia is assigned to investigate the murder, the outcome finding Commander Brian Wills to be the murderer. Commander Tia and the remaining Versailles crew are transferred to the USS Resolution and ordered to report to Starbase 22 for debriefing and reassignment. Commander Tia is placed in command of the Versailles crew for the interim. Lieutenant Scott Thomas is appointed Acting Executive Officer.

On SD240604.15 A memorial service for Captain Thorpe is held aboard Starbase 22. Commander Osric Tia is appointed as permanent Commanding Officer, with Lieutenant Commander Scott Thomas appointed as Executive Officer. Lieutenant Commander Neel Maklaud is reassigned as Commanding Officer, USS Resolution. The Versailles crew are ordered to report to the new Starbase 99 Versailles, a new Wolf class starbase located in orbit of the YaDalla Colony in the Oraken System.
