The first step in becoming a productive member of the UCIP family is the SIMGuide Program. The SIMGuide Program is required for all new members of UCIP. The program takes you through the basics of simming and teaches you how to be a productive member of the team. Covered in the program are two different aspects of simming within UCIP: Email (or forum) simming, and IRC (live, action-based) simming. Cadets are required to take at least one, either IRC or Email training, however a Cadet can opt to take both. Passing SIMGuide involves reading the guide, passing a comprehensive examination and then (depending on what track the Cadet wishes to pursue) pass an IRC or Email practical examination. Anyone who joins UCIP and lists themselves as a New Member is automatically enrolled in this program and should receive a Welcome Letter.
The IRC practical examination usually consists of a number of SIMGuide Staff observing a sim during it's normally scheduled time. If this cannot be arranged, or if the Cadet is not currently apart of a sim, then an IRC log from any sim in which the Cadet took part can be accepted. The Email practical examination consists of a short series of email logs, in which the student is given a scenario and has to demonstrate the basics of simming within a simulation. Typically this is done with an instructor, but if the Cadet is already adding to the life of an email sim then a few logs from that sim's email archive can be accepted. In the event that a member wishes to convert from an IRC to Email sim (or vice-versa) they are only required to take the practical examination for the track that they haven't completed.
Most Commanding Officers will allow a new simmer to start simming immediately and this is perfectly fine and very much encouraged! However, logs sent in and sims attended cannot count toward a promotion until their basic training is completed. Once training has been completed, any logs sent in or sims attented will begin accruing for that Cadet's next available promotion.
Once a cadet completes the practical exam satisfactorily, they will be awarded the ribbon for the track they have completed:
| Blue Ribbon of Excellence Awarded for Email Training |
 |
| Red Ribbon of Excellence Awarded for IRC Training |
 |
After completing basic training, a Cadet has the option of taking advanced courses. A list of available courses is available at the top of this page by clicking on 'Full Course List.'
If you have any trouble with the SIMGuide Program, please contact the SIMGuide Dean. They can help to resolve whatever difficulties you may be encountering.
